Happy Father’s Day, Dads
While praying for my Dad this morning—God rest his soul—a memory surfaced, one that deeply shaped my calling to become a priest.
Dad was a contractor. He could do anything with a piece of wood. Every day he wore T-shirts and blue jeans, except on Sunday morning. I remember, as a little kid, that before church on Sunday morning, he would put on his suit and tie and a nice shirt. I always liked it when he let me shine his shoes.
I asked him why he was dressing up, and he smiled and said, “Son, God is more important than anyone or anything. This is my way of showing Him what He means to me.” Dad’s words really got to me that day.
Father’s Day is such a special day for our Dads. There will be a special meal, maybe some presents, and, most of all, time with the family.
In today’s gospel, Jesus told us, “What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light.”
My Dad revealed a secret to me in the quiet of his heart, what Jesus called darkness that no one else can see. His words and actions spoke volumes and still affect me today.
May I address you, dear fathers, on this day we hold in your honor? Please know how vital your influence is in shaping your children’s lives. Your role as a father is to encourage a child who needs a boost.
Sometimes they need to be brave when facing a challenge. A story about the challenges you have faced will go a long way for them. Perhaps you notice a character trait in a child. Let them know you admire them.
Like my Dad, you play an important role in the little ways you love God and your family each day. Your love and actions may go unnoticed, but your family will carry them in their hearts forever.
“What I say to you in darkness, speak in the light.” Let your family see and experience the beautiful heart God gave you for loving them.
