A new Wineskin Every Day
What do we think about this situation? A child tells a friend, “My Mom and Dad are part-time. We eat maybe three times a week, sometimes four if we’re lucky, because that’s the only time we ever see each other.”
What about this scenario? “My husband and I are married, but we decided to see each other only on weekends, especially Sundays. “The rest of the week, we would each do our own thing.” How much confidence would we have in a part-time doctor, lawyer, or contractor who was only half-committed to their work and showed up only when they felt like it?
Honestly, there’s really no such thing as a part-time disciple of Jesus. It’s similar to what Jesus explains when he says you don’t put a patch of unshrunken cloth on an old cloak; it would just tear away when it’s stretched. This reminds us to be fully committed to our faith.
New wine in old skins will burst the skins. Attending church only on Sundays can be like that. Sometimes, we hope that one hour with Jesus on Sunday will bring change and transform us into a new person.
The Gospel is not a Sunday patch but a new way of life and a new way of seeing everything. Like any healthy human relationship, discipleship is a daily conversion to Jesus. We are constantly changing.
Every day is full of surprises. We can plan our schedule, yet the strangest things happen that we never expected. I am learning to be with the Lord throughout the day. A simple thank you, Lord, for a kindness received or for simply being with me in this next meeting is an invitation He will always accept.
Gospel Challenge:
All He needs is for us to open the door and let Him in on the action. Try it; you may be surprised. We need a new wineskin for whatever the Lord wishes to do with us in our day.
